T.H.E.M./Sanko Unveil New Dosing System at Pack ExpoChicago, Ill. – At the 2008 Pack Expo exhibition convened November 9-13, , T.H.E.M. and Japan-based Sanko Machinery Company, Ltd., exhibited a new 'basculator' dosing system for use with stick packaging machinery. The Basculator system is specifically designed to improve filling speeds and efficiencies for non-free-flowing products. “It appears that some of the difficult products are being improved by as much as 20-35% percent,” Neil Kozarsky, CEO of T.H.E.M., said. With challenging products, the normal sacrifice is speed. This generally allows the product extra time to flow for the desired fill. The Basculator System essentially allows the extra time for product to flow without the one-for-one corresponding speed reduction. The unique design of the Basculator facilitates a two-sided, alternating fill mechanism. With a common product delivery point, one half of the Basculator is filling with product while the other half is dosing the fill stem. The end effect is increased time for product drop and settling without directly compromising run speed. An additional benefit inherent in the design is dust reduction due to the fact that the transfer of bulk product is contained in a stainless steel funnel. Sanko (who invented stick packaging in the mid-1970s) Export Manager Shoichi Yaguchi states, “while sticks were initially used with free-flowing powders, such as sugar-based products, recent commercial popularity has created a demand for sticks containing more difficult formulations that are challenging to produce. “ These new line extensions in the marketplace have necessitated improved dosing systems so that efficient production rates can be maintained, regardless of product flow characteristics. While the basculator improvement was designed and engineered in Japan by Sanko, the system introduced at Pack Expo in Chicago is currently located in T.H.E.M.'s Marlton, New Jersey stick packaging development center. In the immediate future, it will be tested across a number of diverse product applications to determine the precise efficiency gains that it will allow. “The Basculator is currently available for stick pack customers who are interested in having their products evaluated,” Kozarsky said. Founded in 1973, T.H.E.M. has served as the gateway for North American companies to find innovative packaging solutions. By monitoring packaging trends globally, T.H.E.M identifies innovations from all over the world for application in a diverse range of industrial and consumer product companies in North America. |
